The meaning of a healthy life has changed so many times over the years. When our parents were growing up, that meant getting a tan, eating heavy fatty meals and hardly exercising. Exercise was seen as totally unnecessary and overrated. Today, these nostrums are out, although getting sunshine is still thought of as good but not in excess.
Following and sticking to a healthy lifestyle may often seem incredibly hard and complicated. Everyone and their grandmother want to give you advice. It is more often than not, confusing and conflicting. It doesn’t have to be that way. To lead have a healthy life and feel better, you need to adopt a few steps enumerated below.
1. Keep Your Vessel Clean and Clear
Do not put toxic things in your body. These include hazardous substances like cigarettes and drugs. Not only do they have no remeding values, they are also highly addictive. Alcohol is less harmful when drunk in moderation and not in excess.
However, the biggest culprit is junk food. This type of processed food is not only unhealthy but can lead to unwanted diseases. Why? Because they are loaded with fat, sugar and salt in order to make them taste good and fool our senses. Just like cigarettes and drugs, this type of food can be highly addictive. Staying clear from these foods is your best line of defense. Instead nourish your body with clean foods. These include anything from nature. Stick to fresh alternatives like fruits and vegetables.
The less processed and refined the better such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, legumes and whole grains like oats. Adding animal products to a mostly plant-based is the ideal way to go. Sleeping is crucially important for health and well-being. However, most of us, don’t get enough of it. We tend to under-sleep in an attempt to keep up with our busy lives. Not sleeping enough is a world-wide epidemic that unfortunately leads to many diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults get 7 to 9 hours per night. During our sleeping cycle, our bodies heal and repair themselves.
In order to get a good night’s sleep try to go to bed at the same time everyday. Minimize the blue light from screens such as your smartphone, tablet or computers a few hours before getting your shut eye. Try sleeping in a clean bed and turning off the lights.
3. Lifting Weights and Exercising
Exercising is a great tool to keeping weight off and being healthy. Using and building your muscles is super important for health. Lifting weights lowers your blood sugar and insulin levels, (especially if you have diabetes), reduces the risk of heart disease, improves cholesterol and triglycerides and makes you happy by releasing the hormones endorphins, dopamine and serotonin.
Lifting weights and exercising will also improve your shape and help you feel good. Pick an exercise that you like and commit to it. Then go to the gym and lift weights. If you don’t like the gym, you can find alternative ways to lift other objects that are just as effective. There are various online support groups and local venues to help you out. In any case, walking is always a good option. You can do it with your spouse, friends or even your kids. Or if you prefer, do it alone during your lunch hour.
